Day 5: Something you love: Second hand bookstores.
I love reading and joked with my mom that I’d need to bring a suitcase of books with me on my travels. She pointed out that my luggage weight wouldn’t allow it but promised to keep my collected treasures safe. Luckily technology (via a great birthday present from my awesome family) has brought me my beloved Kindle, which I use all the time.
However, there is something about second hand bookstores that I can’t get enough of. I could (and often do) spend hours perusing little shops, winding my way though rows of shelves that are packed to the ceiling with books. I discovered one in Toronto which had a swinging ladder (yes, like the one from Beauty and the Beast that made us all envious of Belle) and spent a full afternoon looking around. I try to visit one store during my travels and limit myself to one book.
This quote sums up the smell of those beloved places perfectly. It explains why I am often found with my nose, quite literally, in a book.

Day 4: A picture that makes you laugh.
This was a hard one, as I have a lot of wonderful people who bring a silly amount of laughter into my life. These two always do. I have some pretty fantastically awesome coworkers up here, and these are two of the quirkiest. It wouldn’t be the same adventure without you!
I’m here to stay and make the difference that I can make
Our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use
The tools and gifts we got yeah, we got a lot at stake
And in the end, you’re still my friend at least we did intend
For us to work we didn’t break, we didn’t burn
We had to learn how to bend without the world caving in
I had to learn what I’ve got, and what I’m not
And who I am “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz. Give it a listen- it is good stuff.
Day 03 - A picture of the cast from your favorite show.
Hello 90s! I opted to kick it old school for this one, as, let’s face it, kids’ TV shows aren’t what they used to be. I watched the two of these shows religiously and I truly believe that being a Wishbone fanatic helped me major in English. I know the difference between alligators and crocodiles thanks to the Kratt’s brothers, along with other awesome animal facts. My closet is also a giant, crammed, explosive mess waiting to be opened and set free, just like theirs.
Anyone else miss good old childhood TV?
Day 02 - A picture of you and the person you have been closest with the longest.
I was brought home from the hospital and at 18 months old, she insisted I was “baby” and, with the stubborness only she can muster, refused to call me by name for months. Jabberjaws has been around ever since. She’s helped me learn to ride a bike, pulled bullies off buses, invented languages, played “House”, choreographed dances, protected me from grade 9 orientation, chauffeured my friends and I around countless times, listened to my rants, and given me a kick in the butt when I need it (though let’s be honest- there were a few cheap kicks back in Tae Kwon Do, just saying!). Our road has been a crazy one, but I’ve been so lucky to have her at my side through it all. Now on the other side of the world, she still checks up on me, calls me out when needed, and laughs with me about life’s insanity. Every meaningful event has been a shared celebration and I know she’ll always be on my team.
Love you more than words can say, big sis.
New Challenge Accepted!
I didn’t quite complete the Feb Photo Challenge, but that is fine. Life gets crazy, but we keep calm and carry on. Thus, I am challenging myself anew with a different list. This is the first on the list…
Day One: A picture of yourself with ten random facts.
1. This picture was taken on my trip to New Zealand.
2. I wanted a picture with a black lamb because when I was 4 I helped save an orphaned lamb on my great aunt’s farm in Manitoba. It was a life shaping moment, bottle feeding the little guy.
3. I lost the watch I am wearing in this picture on my last night in New Zealand. I like to think a backpacker picked it up and is taking it around the world. It has already been to Canada, USA, Ecuador, Australia, and New Zealand.
4. I have yet to discover any music on my own. I get it from my sister and my incredibly cool friends. If you have any suggestions, send them my way!
5. I think the best part of traveling is meeting people. I once met a guy who told me it was both the best and worst, as you are unlikely to see most of the people you meet ever again. I’d like to think I will see all my favourites again.
6. My high school moto is “Carpe Diem” (seize the day). I try to do that every day.
7. I would like my housemate and grandmother to have a lasagna cook off. It is a totally selfish wish, which would most likely end in obesity. The two of them are just such great cooks!
8. Missing something doesn’t make you weak, it just means you have something worth missing.
9. For the first time since arriving in Doomadgee, I was cold today. It felt REALLY weird.
10. I had my first scone and tea party today and felt rather British. It was a jolly good time.
